Eutierria (eu: good) (tierra: earth) (ia: belonging to) Greek
Eutierria means to belong to the good earth. That's us. We have long lost our connection to nature and it's time to rediscover it.
How do we connect? It takes love, respect, and care, something we all have plenty of.
How do we connect? It takes love, respect, and care, something we all have plenty of.
It all started when two people fell in love...
Beatrice: I'm a late bloomer in outdoor recreation. I grew up going to the beach (the great shores of Lake Erie!) and camped only once when i was little. Then, I met J.J. and everything changed. He took me camping, hiking, backpacking, canoeing, climbing, and more until I fell in love with the outdoors (and him too!) The more I went out into nature, the more I valued nature for what it gave me; and the more I learned about what we were doing to the earth, the more motivated I became to protect it. I'm currently in Creative Writing and Society & Environmental Issues at The Ohio State University. To live well, I teach yoga to the hearing and d/Deaf community and work as an assistant director for OYO Camp. J.J.: Born ready to go! I grew up playing in the woods behind my cousin's house on our street and that started everything. Growing up deaf did not stop me; I played several sports, participated in organizations, clubs, and did plenty of traveling and volunteer work. Through my experiences, I learned so much about leadership, nature, and living cooperatively, and it has influenced my philosophy profoundly. I was heavily involved with the Personal Discovery Program at Gallaudet University and it led me to several camps and other exciting teambuilding facilitation programs. It is clear that we live in the information and technology age now and yet people are disconnected from the Earth more than ever. That's why Eutierria will be a place of education with accessibility. |
Our Mission: Many environmental and nature videos are not captioned, we do not have many blogs by Deaf people, and there is very little information in ASL. Our goal is to bring you the same information for nature-lovers in ASL, writing, and with captions. We also want to provide you with a place to send in blogs and vlogs telling us how you play outside, participate in environmental movements, and live life well. Our mission is to inform, educate, enable and create a platform for global environmental action in the Deaf/signing communities. Click to send your submissions. Our Earth: Climate change is happening but we can still do something about it. How? Education. Learn what fracking is, where oil comes from, how trash is processed. Find out what we're doing to change environmental laws and amp up protection. Increase your awareness of environmental impacts at home and in industries. Become a part of the advocacy. Change can only start with you.
Living Green: Care for the earth and others can only begin with care for yourself. If you cannot connect with yourself, then you cannot connect with the good earth. Find yoga videos in ASL, meditation techniques, sustainability tips, cooking, mindfulness, and how you can live your life eco-consciously in your household, in the grocery store, and outside. The Great Outdoors: We want to protect the environment, conserve natural resources, and most of all, preserve nature so we can play in it! We are avid outdoors people and we want to share that with you. Find packing lists for hikes and backpacking trips, "how-to"s for planning camping excursions and choosing the best trails to take, see our adventures, watch what others do, and get inspired to go outside! |
Glenn Albrecht and Eutierria
Glenn Albrecht is a sustainability professor from Australia who invented terms meant to bring awareness to people's feelings of places they feel strongly connected to. Such words include: topaphilia- a positive connection or love to general landscapes and seascapes, endomophilia- a love for a specific area you've experienced, soliphilia- a recognition and love of the entire place including its history and ancestors, solstalgia- that sense of sadness or anger when we see a special place deterioriate, and finally eutierria- the whole and complete feeling of being connected and one with the earth in all her entirety.
These words are important to have because they help describe the relationship we, as humans, have with other people, animals, and the earth as a whole. At the same time, we must remain aware of our separateness from each of these so they can live out their lives in their wholeness while we do with ours. It's a state of being separate but one, individuals but as a community, independent but together.
Check out Glenn Albrecht's blog. We, at Eutierria, owes him many thanks for the inspiration and his positive outlook on our future.
